I am a resident of Bukit Batok and am very concerned about Mr Samir Neji who was the last minute independent candidate for my constituency. Mr Samir has the potential of denying me an opportunity to vote in an alternative party who can be my voice in parliament. This is important to me as life in my estate is getting unbearable and although I have met with the town council and spoken to them about issues that we face, they remain unresolved.
Mr Samir is a new citizen from India, meaning he is not born here . He has heaped praise on Singapore, for giving him & a new and better life which he could NEVER have in Kerala, south India. He lives in an upscale condominium at Keppel Bay which most Singaporeans can't afford and has established his business here . He could have shown his gratitude by giving of his time to worthwhile civic, charity causes or engage himself meaningfully in grassroots activities . Instead, he has chosen to fight against the ruling party which has given him and his family a better life and against the SDP which is a credible alternative party . What is more bizzare is that without the support of the PAP assentors he would have been disqualified as a candidate .
Furthermore, having lived here for 15 years, Samir should be aware of the resentment among Singaporeans regarding the huge influx of foreigners into Singapore. In fact overpopulation is the mother of all our problems. For him to stand in as a candidate knowing full well the sentiments of Singaporeans towards the massive influx of foreigners & to offer nothing but creating 'start ups' in bukit batok is nothing short of humiliating us.
I have spoken to Mr Samir and have sent him a text message appealing to him to withdraw his candidacy so as to give Bukit Batok voters a chance to choose between two credible parties that are run by Singaporeans, for Singaporean and am waiting for his response. Meanwhile here are links to response by other Singaporeans on this matter :
